Artist Statement If an artwork could be a place where to live... My work is a satire of the weaknesses of our society. I want to make an statement and confront the spectator with a reality they don't want to aknowledge. All my drawings are born from a coffee stain, these stains remind me of politicians, of famous people and of the people I see everyday walking in the streets.
About Me
- Monica Hernandez
- Half Spaniard- Half Colombian, Monica’s life has been always a constant battle between this two worlds, she lived all her childhood in Colombia. She studied Fine Arts in Madrid and then moved to NY to study Film. She has shown her work in different Galleries in Spain, Canada and in NYC. Currently she has been granted with an artist residency at the South Florida Art Center, her work has been selected by artist Cornelia Parker to be included with the work of other 29 artists from the 10000 that are registered at the Saatchi Gallery in London for the first reader-curated show that the Saatchi Gallery and The Guardian newspaper had organized in September of 2006. In the year 2007 she has been invited to participate at Circa Puerto Rico Contemporary Art Fair as a Solo Artist in April, and at the Biennale of Florence, in Italy, in December 2007. During this year her work will be shown at CIGE 2007 in Beijing with NY ARTS Gallery from Beijing-China, and at the South Florida Art Center in June 2007. Monica’s work is part of The Ruth and Richard Shack Collection (USA), the Günter Westermann Collection (Germany), and the Otto Reyes Casanova Collection (Puerto Rico).

We live searching for success and fame; our value as a member of a community is related to the weight of our pockets: money is our new god.
In our houses there's the black box that will always remember and tell us the roll we should play in life, it tell us how to achieve success and how to become a better person every day just because of the material goods we have "...Is easy to be happy, you just need a new..." , but all these is just the pure surface of the powers that are behind our consumerism, and our emptiness.

UNVEILING NYC PROJECT 2001-2006
During 5 years I had recycled the paper-bags that I found in NYC. On each paper-bag I made a drawing about the place where I found the bags. I'm Recycling NY. This project has 200 pieces + 165 pictures about NY.
For me these bags are the mirror of our society representing our double standards and moral, showing our need of consuming and buying, as well as showing how careless we are with the earth natural resources.
NY is the city of paper-bags and coffee, everywhere you look you'll see either somebody with a paper bag or a coffee on their hands as well as paper bags dumped on the streets.
